Best New Country Songs | Holler (2)

It’s our favourite time of the week! Time for another roundup of all the biggest and best new songs from the world of country and americana. Apparently, it’s also National Tell a Joke Day! So here’s one you for you!

How many country singers does it take to change a lightbulb?

Two. One to change the lightbulb and Post Malone to collaborate with them on it.

Hahahahaha.

This week’s cover star is Post Malone, who releases his highly anticipated duet heavy new album, F-1 Trillion, today. We’ve been busily delving into all the songs this week here in the Holler office, and we’ve included three of them in our Best New Country playlist for you today.

We’ve got ‘Goes Without Saying,’ Postie’s wonderful collaboration with Brad Paisley, the Sierra Ferrell duet ‘Never Love You Again’ for you, and, seeing as Billy Strings was one of the first country-adjacent artists to bring Post Malone into the fold when the duo covered Johnny Cash's ‘Cocaine Blues’ in 2022 during one of Strings’ shows, it seems only fitting that the Strings collaboration from F-1Trillion, the rattling bluegrass runaway train ‘M-E-X-I-C-O,‘ was included in our playlist today as well.

Morgan Wade was feeling the urge to simplify after a period of relentless touring and intense media scrutiny during the last couple of years, and luckily for us, every time she sat down with her guitar, new songs just started pouring out.

The Virginia-born singer-songwriter made a choice to return to the basics for her new album Obsessed, a solo-written, stripped-down 14-track collection produced by her touring guitarist Clint Wells that showcases Wade at her rawest and most vulnerable.

“I really wanted to get back to doing what I used to do,” she says. “Just make this whatever I wanted it to be.”

We’ve got the sublime ‘Spin’ on our Best New Country playlist today.

Emily Zeck has released her latest EP, Coastal Cowgirl Blues, as she continues to seamlessly blend up classic country twang with breezy ‘60s surf pop with a sound that always feel like summer. The straight talking, warts-and-all love song ‘God Gave You a Mullet’ has landed itself straight on our Best Country Songs About Hair playlist with its mix of cheeky, John-Prine-style back porch melodies and sighing Beach Boys harmonies.

Muscadine Bloodline release their latest full length, The Coastal Plain, a deep dive from members Charlie Muncaster and Gary Staton into their Alabama roots, drawing inspiration from their blue-collar coastal hometown of Mobile, Alabama, where they ran wild as kids surrounded by bustling Cajun fishing villages and desolate timberlands.

Read more about the rise of Muscadine Bloodline and the wave of artists from Alabama coming through in our long read feature, Something In the Roll Tide: Alabama Artists Are Taking Over Country and We're Drinking It Up.

Chase Rice gives us another taste of forthcoming album Go Down Singin’ with ‘Haw River,’ while newcomer Kayley Green emotionally lets go of an ex, realising he could never be the man that she needed him to be on ‘Shadow of a Cowboy.’

Whey Jennings is candidly calling attention to the current drug epidemic happening in America with his powerful and emotional ballad ‘Sleeves,’ the fifth single from Jennings’ highly anticipated first full-length album, Jekyll & Hyde, due out next week.

Cole Phillips releases his debut project No Town, Oklahoma, whichfeatureshis 2023 breakthrough hit, ‘Drinking Alone’ along with ‘No Town,’ ‘Good Guy,’ ‘Midnight Train’ and four brand new songs, including our featured track, ‘River Red.’ ZZ Ward releases ‘My Baby Left Me’ on the legendary Sun Records and Chase Rice teases his forthcoming independent release Go Down Singin’ with ‘Haw River’ before it arrives on 20 September.

Justin Moore has announced his forthcoming eighth studio album, ‘This Is My Dirt,’ for 11th October with the release of his new song ‘The Worst,’ a hearty duet featuring Randy Houser ahead of their co-headlining Country ‘Round Here Tonight Tour kicking off in September.

Written by Moore and frequent collaborators Chase McGill and Jeremy Stover, the song questions if newer is always better while revisiting simpler times without the iPhones, high-tech bicycles and $600 camouflage kids grow up with these days. In three minutes and 21 seconds, Moore and Houser make a point that maybe the tough times build character.

‘The Worst’ is one of my favorite songs from the upcoming album because it reflects on growing up with less and learning valuable lessons from it,” Moore explained about the song. “I’ve realized that not having the most expensive this or that, was actually beneficial. Now, as a parent myself, I understand that giving my kids the best of everything isn’t necessarily the best approach. Instead, the main goal is to teach them to value what they do have. And having Randy Houser, who is also a parent and grew up like me, join me on this track makes it even more special.”

Margo Price has two new songs out today, taken from the soundtrack for Downtown Owl, a new film based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman. Check out the full album for her take on Elvis Costello’s ‘Pump It Up,’ and listen to the brand new Price original, guitar-driven country rocker ‘Shelter Me’ on our playlist today.

North Carolina singer, songwriter and cowboy troubadour,Wesko, releases his latest track ‘Good Old Days’ and Tolland County, CT’s very own twenty-three year old rising Country music star Joshua Quimby surprise drops ‘Big Hot Dogs.’ Blaring country harp, wailing steel guitar, acoustic and electric guitar, a healthy dose of fiddle, BGVs from “Coors Light” viral sensation Chloe Kimes, and a tasteful snare groove combine for a true beer crackin’ Summer anthem as Quimby sings about the simple pleasures of life, with his familiarly clever, tongue-in-cheek lyricism demanding the listener’s attention.

Professing his love for a good hot dog with a side of beer-battered onion rings, Quimby isn’t touching on anything too deep here, but that’s what makes this song all the more special.

Anyone else feeling hungry suddenly?

Corey Kent teams up with Lauren Alaina for ‘Now or Never.’

"'Now or Never' is a song about drawing a line in the sand for yourself,” Kent says. “It’s about loving somebody but refusing to let them continue to hurt you by taking a stand and asking your partner to make up their mind... 'You either love me or you don’t.’”

Oh we do, we do, Corey!!!

Thus Spoke the Fool is the brand-new album from Pony Bradshaw, the final chapter in a compelling trilogy that started with the highly praisedCalico Jimin 2021 and continued with the powerfulNorth Georgia Rounderin 2023. It’s an album we’ve fallen absolutely head over heels for here at Holler and we’re pretty sure you will too.

Elsewhere we’ve got new ones from Brit Taylor and Adam Chaffins, Maddy Kirgo, Willie Nelson, Ron Pope, Josh Turner, ZZ Ward, Warren Zeiders, Denitia, Cole Phillips, Riley Thomas, Walker Hayes, Owen Riegling, the return of Mindy Smith and Kelly Mickwee plus check out the new video for Willi Carlisle's 'Penny Evans' from his Tales From Critterland EP over on Holler.
